How is the laser safety level specified?

May 14, 2020

Highly concentrated laser beam may cause damage to human body, such as eyes or skin. Therefore, the International Electrotechical Commission and Food and Drug Administration classified the safety of laser equipment according to the size of its laser output value. The safety level of laser equipment produced formally should be marked according to FDA or IEC standards.

About laser classification

Lasers are divided into various types according to wavelengths, because lasers of different wavelengths cause different damage to human tissues and organs. Therefore, each type of laser is divided into the following four levels according to its power output and harm to human body.

First-stage laser: that is harmless and control-free laser. The laser light emitted by this class of laser has no danger to the human body during use, even if it is used directly, it will not damage the eyes. No control is required for this type of laser.

Second-stage laser: low-power laser. Although the output laser power is low, occasional glances with the eyes will not cause eye damage, but do not look directly at the laser beam for a long time. Otherwise, the fundus cells are damaged by the photons and damage the retina. However, this type of laser has no thermal damage to human skin.

The third-stage laser: that is, a medium-power laser. When the output power of this laser is focused, direct viewing of the beam will cause eye damage, but the light is changed to unfocused. The diffusely reflected laser is generally not dangerous. This type of laser has no thermal damage to the skin.

Fourth-level laser: a high-power laser. This kind of laser not only damages the eyes and skin of its direct beam and mirror-reflected beam, but also causes serious damage, and its diffuse reflected light may also cause damage to the human eye.
